THE RULES

Familiar board. New possibilities.

One side plays Chess; the other plays ChaturangaPlus. White moves first. Win by checkmate, with standard rules for check; only the Chess king can castle.

• Elephant (E) replaces the bishop. It moves one or two squares diagonally in any direction, or one or two squares forward. It cannot jump or move sideways or straight backward. “Forward” means toward the opponent’s back rank for that color.
• Empress (D) replaces the queen. It slides like a bishop, jumps like a knight, or steps one square in any direction. Only its knight moves jump. It is not a royal piece and can be captured.
• Raja keeps its normal one-square moves. The ChaturangaPlus king can also leap exactly two squares vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, jumping over pieces. The leap may be used once per game, including to capture, but never out of check or onto an attacked square. Ordinary king moves do not use it up; after the leap, only normal one-square king moves remain. Only the departure and landing squares matter; the jumped-over square may be attacked. Only the Chess king can castle. Rooks and knights move as in modern chess.
• Pawns advance one square for ChaturangaPlus; Chess pawns retain their initial two-square move. ChaturangaPlus pawns can still capture a Chess pawn en passant immediately after its two-square move. Promote to a piece from your army: D/E/R/N for ChaturangaPlus, Q/B/R/N for Chess.

Stalemate and bare kings are draws. With a leaping king, other material combinations are not automatically declared insufficient. This app automatically ends games at threefold repetition or the fifty-move threshold. Takebacks are available for practice.
